My 1st graders are assigned a country based on their background,ie. German, French, Italian, etc. They present a poster with the flag, map, Merry Christmas in the native language and any pictures or drawings related to their country. The parents cook up food related to their country and bring in enough for around 20 people. This year, the kids will need to wear a "native costume". I type up a brief(3 min) speech on the traditions and have the kids practice everyday in front of the class. They learn projection of voice, clarity and to stand still and be patient with the next speaker. I created passports for the guests and the children have stamps they use when their country is visited. Each child has a table for their props. The parents love this every year! I hold it in my room the 2nd to last friday before xmas break. I takes hours to set-up and only 1 hour to present it, but the kids love it! There are many websites. Please email me or give me your address and I can forward them to you. This is my 3rd year. Judith.doerr
