I do centers during reading groups in my classroom. I try to do reading groups two days per week. Normally, on Tues. and Thurs. I do a whole group lesson on Monday. I go over spelling words, vocabulary and pre-reading lessons. Then, on Tues. and Thurs. I do reading groups and centers. I try to set up fun, motivating centers. For example, spelling stamping center, math counting money center, etc. I rotate about every 30 minutes. Therefore, it takes about 90 min. to do centers. One group would be at reading with me and the other two groups at centers. Then we all rotate together. If a child finishes a center before the rotation is over then he/she can read a book. I do not give the students work to just keep them busy during centers. I am not a big fan of worksheets. During reading groups, we do pre-reading activities, such as a picture walk(making predictions), etc. Then the students read the story. They either read individually or partner read. We do not do round robin reading. I have been taught that this is a big no! no! After reading we do a closure activity. Talk about the story or skills that need to be discussed for the lesson. If you have any questions please let me know. By the way I teach 2nd grade.
