Clip to ScrapBook
I teach third grade and one of our skills is Main Idea. This is what I do to teach it....
I get a gardening glove and on each finger/thumb I write one word....WHO? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHY? I tell them to find the main
idea of a story, they can answer the five questions and have everything they need to tell someone about that story. I read a short story to them. Then, I put on my glove. I tell them we have all the information we need in our hands for telling the main idea. I ask them to tell me the answer to each...I hold up one finger at a time and say Who? (they answer) Did What? (THEY ANSWER) Where?
(they answer), etc. I have them trace their hand on paper and write the questions on their fingers/thumb. For homework, I have them read our reading story for the week and then answer the questions from their hand. They share the next day. The next lesson then is to write up a short summary by using the information we "have in our hands".

I hope this helps some. If you don't think this will work for you, post back and tell me more of what you are looking for.
Good Luck!
Smiles
