ten do's and don't do's
By Karletha

Clip to ScrapBook
All last week, minus the MLK holiday, I was put in 6 Spanish I classes without any plans other than copies of a crossword puzzle.
Here is what I did that worked well:
1.) Monitor the noise level.
Draw a scale
on the board and, when it gets too loud, give a warning that we are getting too loud. It will always quiet down after that.
2.) Don’t try to talk over them.
They will just get louder as you get louder.
3.) Blowing a loud whistle never works.
It has zero effect.
4.) Doing the clap if you can hear me is fun.
It works by getting all eyes on you.
5.)
Call the law on them.
When they know security is on the way, they will remain calm.
6.) Contract with a bouncer.
There is usually one student who can manhandle the misbehavers.
7.) Warn them as they come in the door.
Say, “no tapping today like you did yesterday”
8.) Keep on teaching.
There are very many students still paying attention and trying to learn.
9.) Ask them for attention, to quiet down, to sit down, and if they are doing the assignment.
Having them responsible at all times for something takes a lot off you and puts responsibility on them.
