Try papier-mache'
By Marilyn B.

Clip to ScrapBook
The first thing I would do is find a good photo of a castle to help inspire your son. Then, using the dimensions you were given, construct the main part from a cardboard box or foam core. Use a utility knife to cut away
parts to make it look more decorative, and use masking or duct tape to add cardboard tubes for the turrets, etc.

Once you have everything taped, use papier-mache' to add newspapers to hold the various parts in place and to give the castle a unified look. To make papier-mache', buy a good wallpaper paste and follow the directions on the box. My favorite is called Metylan, or sometimes

it goes by the name Teknobond.

If you decide to just paint the castle, you need only a couple of layers of newspaper. That's providing that the tape is really doing the work of holding everything in place. Use the black and white or text portion for one layer, and then add a layer of color comics. Alternating the papers helps you keep track of what you've already covered.

Instead of painting, you can give the exterior a stucco-type look. Visit the hardware store or lumberyard to buy some grout or patching material. Then paint, if you wish. There's lots more you can do to embellish the castle, but I think getting started was your main concern. Good luck and have fun!
