Clip to ScrapBook
I am working as a congressional reporter and editor. There is certainly a trade-off -- I miss the kids and their funny stories. The day is calmer (and therefore somewhat longer) without their energy and antics, and without
the constant rushing from one class to the next. We do get busy, don't get me wrong. And it is not all sunshine and roses. Generally speaking, though, the stress level is much lower, and the extra time I have to myself in the evenings and on weekends allows me to recharge in a way I never really did while teaching. I am sure I will miss the long holidays (who wouldn't?) but I think
this more regular schedule suits me better. I didn't hate teaching, and in fact there are many things I miss about it (the kids and my colleagues, most often) but I had to admit finally that its particular kinds of pressure didn't suit me. I like what I am doing now...it's a new kind of challenge and a whole new world, really. I wouldn't trade the time I spent in schools, but I certainly do regret the personal and family time I sacrificed for the job. Nobody will give that back to you. I think everyone needs to make their own decision about this. Most of my friends are still teaching. Some want out, but many are very happy and have no plans to leave. It just depends.
