I would stress the importance of having an assignment planner to keep track of work. Also, instructing on how the planner should be filled out to fully utilized its effectiveness. You'd be amazed at how many people don't| know what to expect in the planner or how it should be used. Also, having the parents set up with their child some kind of "checks and balances." For instance, a checklist of what the parent should be doing to help the child (checking to make sure homework is completed, making sure homework is put in backpack, 5 minute review of math facts each night, some kind of hands-on activity | | liek helping prepare supper with child to practice measurement facts or telling time, etc.)and what the child should be doing to ensure success in school (completing homework, giving parents any school correspondence, putting backpack by the door, filling backpack the night before, etc.)I don't know what grade level you are targetting, but learning the importance of reviewing each subject 5 minutes with a parent would be great. It would be a 20 - 30 minute review nightly of the various lessons. Students could show parents how to solve a math problem they did in class. I know a lot of my parents have trouble helping their kids on some work (5th grade) and having the student explain it will clarify for the kids how the problem should be worked. I hope this helps!
