Death of A parent
By Lori

Clip to ScrapBook
I had a girl in my second grade classroom lose her mother this year after a long battle with cancer. I was close to the mom. The fatehr had nver been involved with school so he was feeling very overwhelmed. He came in when
he was ready adn I went over all those litle things like when lunch money is due, etc. He works a lot so I offered to email himany notices I send to the class. This is easier for him. He was nervous that he would forget little things like a toilet paper tube we might need so I send him reminders. My class parents are wonderful and our families have been sending over meals. Our nurse came
into class to discuss the issue with the other students prior to this little girl coming back. All I can say is taht I love her as mucha s I did before, and she seems happy. I think since her mom had been sick for over three years it had been quite a burden on her. I also put the father in touch with the scool counselor just in case he thought she needed support at school in addition to her grief counselor. I also am in contact with the counselor to keep an eye on things. I was very worried about the holidays, so I made sure to say gifts were for whoever you wanted to make them for moms, dads, neighbors, gerbils, etc. To keep it light hearted.
