SUCCESS By HEIDI

I love the circle class talk thing. Here's is somethign I got from reading a Harry Wong book about the First Days of School (I know you're part way in, but bear with me!) I started the year by telling my kids that I care| sooooooo much about helping them succeed that there are certain things I just CAN NOT ALLOW. If I ask someone to stop, it's not because I am mean, or don't like them. It's because I want them to succeed this year. For example, I will not let them talk while I am speaking or while someone else in the class has been asked to speak. Not only is it rude, but also, if they are talking | | then they are not listening. They might miss important information or directions. I care so much about their success, that I won't let that happen. Also, if they are talking, someone else near them might not be able to hear the things they need, so that behaviour is not only getting in the way of you being successful, but might also get in the way of someone else's success. That is just not acceptable! Our class expectations are 1. Respect people and people's property. 2. Listen and follow directions. 3. Always do your best! Most problems are with #1. If a kid speaks out when they should be listening, I point to the #1. It's not respectful to interrupt. IF a kid says something hurtful to me or anyone, it's #1. etc.
