5th Grade
By Jennifer in OK

Clip to ScrapBook
This is my first year teaching 5th grade (previous 3 in 4th). I too find myself torn between the two thoughts you posted. A large part of me is coming to the realization lately that I am not doing a very good job teaching
the responsibility. Therefore, a large part of my thinking until recently has been thought #2. I think the reason I am torn is that it is not my SOLE responsibility to teach these kids about getting homework done, turning in papers, studying for tests, etc. It has to be at home too. I mean, I review with the kids and give direct questions from the test. Then they come in the next
day and bomb it. I can make sure the books get home, but what happens there is outo f my control. I am very selective in what I let them redo when it comes to tests. On daily work, anything I record in the gradebook can be redone if it is failing. I know many middle school teachers get frustrated witht he elementary teachers and tell us we baby them a lot. I'll admit that that is true, but we are hoping to show them success at a young age. It does bother me when things get out of hand at the babying like taking away honor roll, etc. so we don't hurt the feelings of the other kids. I could go on and on about this, but I have to read other messages!
