NC teaching
By Amie

I don't know enough about jobs and salaries on Long Island to give you a definite answer, but here's what I do know:

1. Getting the job - There are generally a number of jobs open at the beginning of each school year.
I live in the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill), and there is a great deal of turn-over due to people moving in and out of the area. In particular, they usually need teachers in Wake and Cumberland counties.

2. Making enough money - You should be able to make enough money to live around here. The state salary scale is posted on the NC DPI (Department of Public Instruction)

website. This is the baseline, but many counties offer a stipend on top of that. The salaries in NC are certainly lower than in NY, but cost of living is also lower here. For example, one bedroom apartments in the Triangle generally run $500-700. Car insurance is also much lower. (I moved here from Boston 14 years ago, and I'm still paying less per year for car insurance than I did then!)

Something else you didn't ask about: NC is a great place to live! It's a beautiful state with a gorgeous beaches and mountains. There's lots going on, but you can still "get away from it all" very easily. The arts community is very active, and the nice weather allows a lot of time for outdoor activities. And, of course, there's college basketball!

Good luck with your decision!
