I am an early childhood teacher. I teach first grade at a catholic school. We have done dinosaurs for 9 years. I break down the subject into weeks. We make a time line of the Mezazoic Age... the Triassic, Jurassic and| Cretaceous peiod and put it on the wall. We have each child do a report(first grade style) about a dinosaur of choice as wel as draw a picture.. I edit this as we put it in the hall at the end of our unit with our murals. We get our info from Enchanted Learning.com...a fabulous site for teachers. We have the children work in small groups and paint a mural of each period and we have then | | paint or use craypas to design their dinosaur and then they cut out and glue on mural of appropriate time period. I liked the idea for herbivore, herbivore, carnivore( duck, duck, goose). We read lots of books and view some films from the lbrary. I choose each year what I want them to learn and then I ask them what they are interested in ..one year we made paper mache dinos .. a huge mess but cool end product....we do dot to dots...we do lots of journal writing about what they are learning...we dig for fossils.. green jello with gummy bears buried.. we use tooth picks for tools..and we usually have a party and watch Dinosaur.. or something we vote on....we have a blast..I enjoy it as much as they do...relax and enjoy.. they are such fun...you'll be great!
