Sub Plans By Tate

After subbing for 2 years I make sure I leave good sub plans. We have workbooks that I never use in class but do use for my sub box. My students and I spent a couple class periods at the beginning of the year getting to| know each other and tearing pages out of the wb's! I have 121 students so doing this myself would have been a nightmare. The pages are bundled with rubberbands and in a box. I pull them and place them in my sub box as needed. Each afternoon when I leave it takes me a minute to put my sub stuff on my podium just in case something comes up and I need a sub at the last minute. The worksheets | | from the wb's are used as extra practice of skills already learned. I also leave a small token of appreciation for the sub: money for a much needed soda in a cute little envelope I made during the summer. I have had subs stop me in the hall telling me what a joy it is to sub in my room because everything is so well laid out. A good rule is to leave meaningful work but don't enter it in the gradebook. I've seen situations where subs give test answers and so I just avoid having that be an issue. Also, I agree leaving a movie should be a NO WAY! I showed a movie just before Christmas break and will NEVER do that again! They were terrible! I do think treatment of subs should be addressed. My two years as a sub were terrible and it wasn't because of the students.
