Writing By Brooke

When we introduced story writing with my class we used the book, Tuesday. It has no words. We went through the book and shared all of the pictures. The students were then given a copy of the first few pages and were instructed| to write a lead. A couple days later the students were given several more pages and were instructed write the problem and solution. Next, they were given the remainder of the story and they wrote the conclusion. This took about a month to finish the story up. We didn't work on it everyday though. The students begged to work on their Tuesday stories. They did a rough draft, | | revision and then did a final draft in a book format, which we binded and got ready to go home. We are just finishing this up. They loved it. We have seen great progress with our kids. We held individual conferences with the kids as they worked. We worked on transitions and making the words more vivid. I would highly recommend this writing lesson. Also, it really helps for kids to share their writing. We sit in a circle sometimes and share our writing. They choose a part of their writing to share and then other students comment on what they like. Another idea is QuickWrite. The students have a QuickWrite notebook. I hold up an object and let each child touch it. They cannot talk. They are given two minutes to write. After they write they share something about their writing. Their writing will grow over a few months of writing. They try to make their writing vivid and descriptive. They can write poems, lists, stories, descriptions, etc. Good Luck!!!!
