Catholic Schools Week By Kate

Every year our school celebrates Catholic Schools Week. There is usually some, parent assoication sponosored, enrichment program for the students (this year the PreK-2 will each have a storyteller & puppet making activity).| The student body is responsible for an outreach program for the community (food drive, collect adult size hats/mittens for a shelter, diaper drive for a teen parenting program, make cards for seniors at a local nursing home and deliver them....). We have our "Community Readers Day" and invite a firefighter, police officer, the mayor, and other community representatives to read | | to each grade level. The readers are welcomed with coffee and donuts and escorted to the classroom by student council representatives. They read a preselected book by the librarian, who is kind enough to provide appropriate material. Our school parent volunteers are invited to breakfast (danish, coffee, and fruit). During the breakfast, which lasts one hour, the priest says a blessing and some students read poems or short essays about how classroom volunteers have made a difference in their class. We also photocopy our school prayer onto card stock and have the students write "thank you" on the back and draw a picture (smiley face, flowers, sunshine...). These thank you cards are distributed to the school families so that everyone is thanked for their help during the school year. The lunch room provides a free hot dog, chips, and cookie lunch to all on Friday. We celebrate mass together on Saturday night and invite all the school families. There is pasta, salad, and drinks for all afterwards. Generally, a teacher appreciation luncheon is planned by the parents. The teachers may plan fun classroom activities during the week, however "parties" are not allowed. Good luck!
