Lack of Necessary Materials: Pencils, paper, etc. By Julie

My sixth graders are irresponsible when it comes to bringing materials to class. The students have lockers, no desks to put their materials in. They move to a new classroom each class period. I have had about 3% of my students bring their own notebook paper to class. (and, unfortunately, they don't bring it with them every day) They also do not bring pencils. Some days I have half the class without a pencil. I have three steps they are suppose to follow prior to the tardy bell ringing. #1. If they do not have a pencil, they are to go buy one from the office for $0.25. (Unfortunately, the | | office is now out of pencils!!) #2. If they cannot buy a pencil, they need to borrow a pencil from a classmate. (so many classmates choose not to borrow their pencils for fear they will not get them returned or that the student will use up the eraser on it, therefore, no one to borrow from.) #3. If they cannot borrow from a classmate, they need to then borrow from the teacher. (I have gone through 12 or more pencils in a day! with very few of them being returned. Luckily, I have not had to pay for them out of my own pocket. Unfortunately, the school doesn't always have pencils on hand in the supply closet.) What would you suggest? I have written students up. I have docked them points. I have even made them sit in class quietly without a pencil, resulting in late work they will have to turn in at a later time.
Thank you for reading such a long post. What do you do?
