looking bad
By Michael Jackson

Clip to ScrapBook
I had a crummy 5th period. I tried the most advanced classroom management strategies to bring things under control. I ended up being replaced by a permanent teacher. A few weeks later, my replacement is no longer there
because the students ran him off.
I have this same problem. Even though I am only a substitute, my reputation is that of a full-time permanent teacher. I get long-term assignments where I am just put in there and told that I am on my own.
Since I am being evaluated, I like to have a noise level below a 5, everyone seated, and continuation of the lessons. When the noise gets too
loud, or too many people are roaming around, or I am teaching to myself, I get worried about being able to ever get a real job. Even though it is worth it because I get paid, I feel that too many problems in my classes will result in not ever getting a real teaching job.
I am certified, have A’s in classroom management, use management in my classes, and still have problems. The students tell me that it is not me but them.
From the behavior of the students, I can see that the permanent teacher is having problems; therefore, on all my sub jobs the students always ask if I am going to be the new teacher from now on.
If your crummy class is making you look bad, of course you think that they won’t have you back next year. You must start trying out new management strategies like sending positive notes home to parents, building a vine of friendliness, strengthening relationships with the good students, attending and supporting school events, and getting help.
