I agree with you that good behavior begins in the home. Unfortunately, a lot of parents aren't teaching their children to have good character, so they come to school "doing their own thing" instead of what the teacher asks of them, and they also act disrespectfully. All you have to do is meet some of the parents of the students you work with to understand why the children act the way they do. I got a letter from a parent yesterday that told me "I don't like you very much." Well, if the parent feels this way, I don't suppose the child is going to show much respect for me, either. Fortunately, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in your OWN children, as I have. My children have never been disrespectful towards adults that I am aware of. Teaching children respect isn't all that difficult. It just takes a little time and effort if you want to have respectful children. Why our students' parents don't work on it is a mystery to me. I guess they just don't make the effort or take the time.
