Teaching your child
By My opinion

Clip to ScrapBook
Although I have seen it work in some instances, I think in most cases it's in everyone's best interest for a mother not to teach her own child. (It's even difficult for aides when their own child is part of the mix!) I think
your own situation has shown you that it's not working for you. If you have another option, you would be wise to take it.

My mother taught both my brother and me. (She had no other options at the time.) While it was no problem for me, it just added to a tense relationship with my brother. Like you, she treated him differently than the other children. (He was the only child

she ever spanked--and that was back when it was legal to spank!)

I wouldn't consider the fact that you are unable to teach your own daughter a failure on either your part or hers. It's not that uncommon for parent and/or child to be unable to make the switch in roles. I've had several parents say to me, "I would love to homeschool, but it would destroy my relationship with my child." With some personalities it works, with others it doesn't.

I'm not getting into the spanking debate (!), but I would say that if you do end up keeping your daughter in your class, you need to:

1. Treat her just as you would any other student. (Don't give her a punishment or special favors you wouldn't give the others.)

2. Keep school problems at school. (That would be true for any age, but at four consequences need to be immediate. Can she even remmeber what happened at school that she is getting swatted for at home?)

Just my opinion for what it's worth.
