This happened to me !

Last year, this happened to me with a student in my 3rd grade class. No problems, etc. The mom sent me very nice holiday gifts, came to the Christmas party and visited nicely, etc. Then one day out of the blue she just
went on the attack! She picked at every little thing I did, just like you said. I told her child "I have already explained this direction 3 times, please find out from a classmate." That was unusually cruel, etc.
What is crazy is that the girl and I got along great! The child loved me and often called me mom by accident! I think this is where the root of the problem began, because

the mom overheard her slip and call me mom at the Christmas party and went ballistic. I just laughed it off and told her I pretty much answer to anything that is respectful. Shortly thereafter is when the attack began.
I was taking it as a personal assault, because it was. She called the principal numerous times and we had to meet with her. The principal refused to move the daughter. I later found out, because the girl told me, that the mom moved to California ("for her job")and left the daughter with the step dad. How strange is that? She came back every other weekend to visit. Whatever reason caused this, I decided, was what caused the assault on me before she left. Bottom line: She had big time personal problems and a jealousy issue with me and right before she left decided to attack me.
There could be an outside reason that this mother is acting out. It most likely has NOTHING to do with you. Just try to ride it out. That's what I did. Good luck!
