Nurse, pencil sharpening, unprepared.... By Heather

The nurse situation,.... I usually use my own judgement. Sometimes, if I doubt the student,I call the nurse and aske her if it is ok if Johnny comes down, he's not feeling well. I have tried allowing them to put their heads| down for a while, but learned my lesson when a student (who always went to the nurse) asked to go one more time with a stomach ache, and I said no, go put your head down, and he ended up throwing up all over the place. YUK!!! Pencil sharpening.. I carry about 3-5 pencil sharpeners with me. You know, the plastic ones that you have to actually turn the pencil to sharpen it. If they ask |
| to sharpen a pencil, I hand them one of those, and allow them to do so. It keeps the class quiet, and the student in his/her seat. If you are in a class for more than one day, you may want to announce that pencil sharpening will be allowed at the beginning of class, and for students to have more than one sharpened pencil for a backup. It's amazing how something so simple as sharpening a pencil, throwing a piece of paper away, going to the r.r., and nurse can get out of hand if you allow it. Naturally, students are going to try you. All I can tell you is to use your own judgement. There are alot of followers out there, and if they see one getting to do something they aren't, it starts a chain reaction. Another suggestion is to see what the teachers' policy is on things of that sort. Sometimes, they do it because she allows them to, or it could simply be because they are taking advantage of you. Good Luck!
