Last year, I went through the same thing. I moved to Illinois from California because my husband is in med school. I thought I would have an easy time getting a teaching job because I have had four years of teaching experience.| Unfortunately, I too had problems with transferring my California credentials to Illinois. (I had gotten my certification from an alternative program) I ended up taking a job as a second grade teacher in inner city doing the exact same thing as the other teachers (and more!)and getting paid 70 a day with no benefits. I got strep throat and had to go to a free clinic to get treated! | | When I approached the chicago public school district to ask them if there was some way to try to get benefits they told me that I would be better off applying as a teachers aide. I have so much experience in teaching intensive reading an writing and they had the gall to tell me I would be an aide. I went back to the principal and told her I was leaving. The only thing I regretted was that I was leaving the kids in the middle of the year. When I told them I was leaving, they were crying and it broke my heart. But I could not stay in a district that was just so crazy! They told me that I could not teach because I was missing 15 hours of student teaching. I told them that I taught for four years but they would not count that!!! Anyway, after a year of misery I finally got my teaching certification for Illinois. I am counting the days till my husband is done with med school and we can go back to the warmth of southern California. I'm so done with winter!
