Year Round Schooling By My Humble Opinion
|
|
As a teacher, I love year round schooling. One major perk, at least in our district, is that you are able to sub on your off time. It is a chance to earn a great deal of extra money. And since I only sub at the school I| work at, it is very conveinient (sp?). What is even better is that with the schedule the way it is, we work for 4 months and have 2 months off...every time. So basically, after every 16 weeks, we get an 8 week break. Leaves very little time for burn out. An added bonus is that we get paid year round, instead of the 10 monthly pay checks of traditional calendar, we get 13 pay checks. On | | the other side of the coin, there is always one rover...a teacher without a permanent classroom. That teacher has to move in and out of the classrooms that are not being occupied by the off track teacher. This causes some problems when dealing with different styles (ie: levels of neatness, classroom environment constraints on the rover, etc...) We also do not have the extra time in the year to set up. I read all the time about teachers saying they have the week before school started to set up. There is no such thing in year round as there are ALWAYS kids there. For kids however, I am not exactly sure that the schedule we have is the best. They get 17 less days per year (however the time is made up with longer days) and the breaks in between are a tad bit long. Also, with the way the schedule breaks down, one track always comes back with only a few weeks to prepare for the state tests. Most kids seem to acclamate well however and there is very little complaining from the parents.
