Hi Andi! Welcome back to teaching! It's funny but a teacher at my school taught K for 7 years and this year they moved her to 4th. I should have you guys talk! A friend of mine helped me set up my math center as I call it.
It is based on a math curriculum called Math My way, I believe. We call it Math center becasue alot is geared to Math even though the kids don't realize it at first. We start with the calendar and I have different patterns with different shapes for every month (bought at techer's store but can be made). Then we today is, tomorrow is, yesterday was, etc. I use oj cartons with straws for
counting each day by ones, tens and hundreds. I also put up on different seasonal shapes what number day it is and that goes around the room all year. We graph the weather on a chart (sunny, rainy, snowy, etc) the seasons. birthdays, who lost a tooth. I also have a magic sentence with a spelling word left out of the sentence that each day different kids try to figure out. Then class reads together. We have songs we sing with the calendar and weather. At the end of the year, each day 1 child comes up with the pointer and does the whole math center themselves (of course with my guidance). I improvise alot during this 15 minutes and it gives the kids time to tell me things before we start our day. They sit on the rug in front of the calendar and everthing is up in the board on charts and posters in front of them. I hope this wasn't too confusing. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. This only my 3rd year teaching 1st but I subbed for 10 years before that! See ya, Barb
