Lesson Plan ideas for January
By Sharon McClendon

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi,

I am an Early Childhood teacher in Dallas. I teach 3 year olds. In January we learn about Winter changes; Dr. King; and Transportation.

There are many great books available on each of these subjects.

For our unit
on Winter we usually make bird feeders and hang them around our school. Two very easy ones are (1) pine cones painted with peanut butter and then rolled in bird seed. ang with yarn or string. (2)toilet tissue rolls and again paint them with peanut butter and roll in bird seed. After we hand them we make a daily trip outside each day to see if birds are eating from them or if we can tell
if any have eaten from them. Usually we catch several birds eating. Of course this can open a discussion on migration of birds.
For Dr. King's birthday we celebrate by having a schoolwide Kindness week. We do things like making kindness coupons up and then when a faculty or staff member see someone doing something 'nice' they are rewarded with a coupon. At the end of the week the students coupons are counted and a special kindness award is given to the top students at each grade level.
Transportation is a fun unit. We divide it into 3 areas: Air,land and water. A great bulletin board is to have the students draw different types of vehicles and then collage them onto a mural of the ground,a waterway and the sky. If you are near an ocean you can include submarines, etc. and if you are close to lakes or rivers you might want to learn about ships of today and the ships of the past. This makes for an interested mural and bulletin board.
If you have any questions concerning other units feel free to contact me.
Have a blessed new year!
