Clip to ScrapBook
we use Saxon math, so many of our activities are actually set up with our series, but i've used similar activities in teaching both K and 1. We do these each morning, with the Student of the Day helping to lead them (with
teacher help/guidance, or course.)
1. On the calendar, count the days so far, add the date for today on today's pattern piece. The pattern is a shape in our case, we discuss the pattern, whether it be AB or ABBC as is the case with this month.
2. Look at the date just added, 'Drive up the road' to today's day of the week. Change the date sentence to match today's date. (Child erases
yesterday's date and writes in today's.) We use lots of dry erase papers.
3. Weather Graph: look outside, what is it MOSTLY today? sunny, cloudy, rainy or snowy. We add the shape to the graph and discuss the results, comparing, etc.
4. Count days of school--add the new shape for how many days we've been in school. I use a different shape for each season (summer-suns, fall-leaves, winter-snowmen, spring-rabbits; these are die cut shapes that we post around the room as we progress through the year.) Every '10' day is written on an orange shape, so students can see the counting by 10s.
5. Money: i have money posted on the board, the student counts the money and we write the amount. Right now we're just using dimes and pennies, but this changes through the year as we're ready.
6. Counting on 100 chart: i have a large 100 chart, the Student of the Day chooses a number to count to, counting by 1s. They point, we count. Then we practice counting by 10s, 5s, odds/evens, etc. Then i end with a 'Quiz'--i give them a #, they count as quickly as they can, while everyone else looks for the number.
7. We also practice Right/Left... touch your left ear, your right shoulder, etc. This is always a good filler, too.
