Teacher/Educator...
By T. Smith

Clip to ScrapBook
One of the reasons that I have been upset is that I have been trying since July to get a plan in place to help create accomodations for my daughter (who is in 4th grade, and has ADD and psychological problems, and who has
a very high IQ, possibly genius level). The teachers have not been educated on how to deal with ADD afflicted children, even though I have requested it, the IQ is not being challenged, teachers have admitted they know nothing about ADD, so they do not understand the condition or the ways they can help her. I have offered to help the teachers, I have followed the chain of command to get
help, and just when I was prepared to let the testing go through (over three months after I originally requested it), a teacher did something to my child that was just plain insensible and irresponsible to do to any child. The teachers are of course teaching to the PACT Test (in SC), which for some reasons mean they are teaching to the bottom level of Bloom's Taxonomy. Best Practices are not being observed, my child appears to be bored in many of her classes, and I find that me and my husband are the ones who are honing her higher order thinking skills. Every program it appears that the school has to offer appeals to the children who need help learning to read, and most work appears to be content oriented. None of this applies to my child who scores high on the PACT Test and who needs to be challenged. I'm hurting for the school, who needs to work hard for the children who are below basic, but in the process of working to help those children, the education system is failing my own child. I apologize if I am being harsh, but I've asked so many people to step in and do their job, and I just don't see it happening. I have had to help my child with organizational strategies, but no one else seems to comprehend that they have to help as well. I can't do this alone.
