Fab idea, but...

Thank you for the advice! It means a lot to me to know that I can come to this board and express things I cannot at work.

I talked to mom Friday and asked if she had seen the handouts concerning the essay and of course
she hadn't. I asked if she had looked in her daughter's assignment book where each stage we were at should have been listed, and she hadn't. I asked her if she realized that her daughter had 5 weeks to comlete essay and again she hadn't until the last. I asked if she had seen the brochure, rubric, and contract I had sent home the day before and she said she had seen the contract that

morning but didn't read it. Her daughter had placed it in front of her and asked her to sign it and she did without seeing what she had signed! It was a contract that basically said that the parent had reviewed the brochure and rubric and understood the guidelines for the next project! I even gave the date the brochure was handed out and the due date in December! Plus, parents are supposed to check assignment book each evening and sign but after this incident I have to wonder how many read what they are signing? And in the hope that the students will be more involved in this project I announced that I too will be completing it and they will grade it! They really love that! Several are already planning to fail me! I did stress that they have to grade me according to the rubric I will grade theirs with! I will talk to my team leader Monday and ask her if we should schedule a meeting with mom if she calls again and I feel she will or that if I am called to the Principal's office to explain then my team leader will go with me. I feel bad giving this student a bad grade but that student chose to not complete the essay as directed and as written on a handout. I have an honor's student that recieved a low grade as well and it was because my directions were ignored. By the way this is 8th grade.
