STORY MAPPING: they map out the story (can choose a way: 1. after each chapter for novels, or a few pages of shorter books, write down waht has happened so far (include all story elements0 then predict what will happen| next. 2. Actually draw a map, including the events and story elements of the story. GRAFFITTI: Put up chart paper around the room with headings that pertain to your study (i.e. Earth Science Unit would have chart papers on Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic, Crust, mantle, Core, Magma, etc.) Students are put into groups(in this case your teachers) and each group starts at a different | | chart. they get a certain amount of time to work with their members to write down everything they know about that title. Call time and have them move in a rotation to the next chart (do the same then move to the next, etc.) You might have each group write in a different color to distinguish who wrote what. OH, they can't list anyting that is already there unless they think it was wrong. Drawing a diagram or little drawing is permissible. After everone has been to every chart, then stop, discuss and see if there is anything that needs to be added, changed, etc. This is GREAT for a reveiw and the kids love it!!KWL Chart This is a chart to begin before a unit to be studied. Section off your chart like K W L _________________________________________________ Then under K take ideas from the class of what they Know(K) about the subject matter. Even if you know it is incorrect, write it down. Under W write what they Want(W) to learn about the subject. Then after you study your unit, then you come back and fill in what they Learned(L). they love to see what they thought they knew before but learned that wasn't right. Alternatives to Worksheets (there are two teacher books with that very title) you make Awards for books, Cereal Box Ads for Books, Invitations for Characters of you story, Ladder books, Flip Flap books, etc. If you are interested in how you can use some of these, I'll be happy to elaborate more. For example I use the ladder books for spelling or vocab. words and Flip Flap books for suffixes/prefixes, Story Elements, synonyms, etc. Hope these help you some.
