ability grouping?

Do you mean departmentalizing by subject alone, or by the level of students also? If you are researching the latter, do an Internet search for the effects of "tracking" and/or "ability grouping" on students. You will find most of the research to suggest that it is effective for our higher learners, but has negative effects on the rest.
