terms of endearment

I wanted to be sweet to my fifth graders last year. I had such a small class that I thought we could be like a cozy little family. I called the kids "honey," and so did some of the other teachers at my school. However, I found out that some of the children, particularly the boys, found it offensive. I stopped the practice.
