A good example of the schwa soudnd is in the word Alaska. (the ending a sound). It does sound a lot like short u as in cup or umbrlla.
On the west coast, it would be normal to hear someone say: "Give me a (schwa) hand." However, as previous posters mentioned, if the letter a starts the sentence it is prononunced as the oong a, as in " A dog chased a cat."
