About the spelling... I feel the same frustration. There are many high frequency word lists floating around. I was at an inservice lately that had a list of "No Excuse" words that were not allowed to be spelled wrong in any handed in stuff. This could be on a word wall or even a list laminated on their desk. When marking those are the words you would correct for spelling. Hope this helps.
