I do guided reading in my classroom but use the basal that the district provides. I must do this to make sure that I'm teaching board approved curriculum. It is helpful though because I can scaffold so all readers understand and I know that my lowest readers aren't ending up with a 2nd grade education in reading. I think it works really well. We also do Literature Circles and that's how I incorporate trade books and novels.
