new computer / old files not opening

Sounds like your new software is not recognizing the format of your old files. Is Microsoft Office installed on your new Dell? Assuming that it is, what version MS Word did you have on your old computer? Was your old computer a PC or a MAC?Do you still have your old computer? If so, you might try opening your original files there and saving them in a different format, such as "text only with line breaks".
