For the most part I only keep an eye on the time when I have to send my kids to another teacher. One time I do use a timer is during writing time, if I don't I find we can use our entire day writing. I bought this really cool timer for your overhead at the teacher store. It will either count down or up. It was expensive ($45), but it has been great this year for writing.
