What sound would you say the "schwa" sound is exactly.

The two sounds I use for a is (long A) but only in a few circumstances as some posters have mentioned.

Usually I pronounce it as a short a sound (like in apple).

I'm trying to figure out this "short u" sound others have mentioned and I can't get that sound in my head. Short U to me is what I would hear in cup or umbrella.
