Why not try asking the students for some "hot topic" ideas? You can have a suggestion box type of arrangement where they can make anonymous suggestions. You could review them and see if there's a suitable topic or perhaps a suggestion may trigger an idea of your own. If it's a topic from the "hot topic box", be sure to let the students know that. It may encourage more ideas. If you've adapted a suggestion, let them know that, too!
