I don't think 5th grade is too old for this at all! Most of the kids haven't heard of many of the idioms used in Amelia Bedilia and would love to "decipher" them! I used this book all the time in my 5th grade classes (I teach in a 95% english language development school) and it was quite a good literature choice. Sounds like you are right on track with what you want to do...and adding the computer tie in is great!
