I've used magnets with my 1/2s. They just adore time experimenting with them. They usually work out the 'attract/repel' thing on their own. You can get them to see how many paperclips they can chain up using magnetic force, make patterns with iron filings, make a magnet with a pin, use magnets to push objects around on a table (by using the magnets under the table), make a table of things that the magnets pick up and don't pick up. they will have a ball!
