The only example I can think of in which the word _a_ would be stressed is when it could be replace by the word _one_, as in

I wanted _a_ hamburger, not five! (long a sound)

Can anyone think of another example of the word _a_ being stressed?

Also, what about _the_? I never learned a pronunciation rule as a student, but as an adult I heard that it is a long e sound before certain vowels (e.g. The End) and a schwa sound otherwise. Any thoughts?
