I teach 6th graders and give them time to write a the end of the day. I write assignments on the board next to the subject name as I assign them throughout the day, so kids can write it as they go if they wish. A great way to keep parents informed and involved is to make kids write EVERYTHING down, whether they finished it or not. I just have them put a checkmark next to the finished ones. This way, parents can see that their kids did more than "nuthin" all day long!
