Do you have to teach the book in order? If not, skip it until after you've taught nouns and verbs.

I also teach my kids to find the verb & draw a line in front of it. From the front of the line to the beginning of the sentence ---- subject. From the line to the period-- predicate. We use markers to draw the line, underline subject, circle predicate, cloud simple subject, and box simple predicate.

Good Luck! I would skip it & move to nouns. Of course, you will teach it later in the year.
