Clip to ScrapBook
As the students edit their papers, have them circle the first word in every sentence and then notice the pattern. How many sentences start the same way? This has worked for me in direction paragraphs when my third graders want to start every sentence with "Then..." and also with the kids who chronically do not capitalize the first word in a sentence. Sometimes awareness is all it takes (sometimes!!). You could then do a mini-lesson to show them how to restate the same idea but beginning the sentence with a different word. Hope this helps!
