Have them "make a bed"

Most 3rd graders know how to spell the word bed. Have the child take their two hands and make a fist with each but leave the thumbs sticking upwards. Have them then bring the fists together in front of them to "make a bed."when the two fists meet the thumb sticking up on the left hand will make it look like a lowercase b and the right hand will look loike a d. Remind them that bed is spelled b-e-d and therefore their left hand is making a b and their right is making a d.
