I live about three hours away from NYC. For the past six or seven years we've stayed at the Hampton Inn in Secaucus, NJ. They have a free continental breakfast and the bus to Port Authority stops just across the street. It's $5.00 for a round trip bus ticket which you purchase from the driver. It's never been a problem. Saves on all the taxes and parking garage fees in NYC. There's no parking fee at the Hampton, it's pretty secluded so leaving your car really isn't a worry. It takes about 10 minutes to get into Manhattan.
