orton gillingham method
By Christina

Clip to ScrapBook
If this child is in 5th grade and reading at a 1st grade level, then first he needs to be evaluated for having a learning disability.
Then, whether or not he has a learning disability, I would try the Orton Gillingman Method (Preventing Academic Failure) approach to reading. It is a very structured multi sensory approach to reading. If followed carefully and systematically, children with severe (or not so severe) learning problems can learn to read. I am a special education teacher in NYC and this approach has worked for all my students with LD.
Good luck.
