    Hi Judy:

I have always taught a short story unit that covers the basic elements of a story. Conflict, plot diagram (introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion),setting, foreshadowing, theme. etc. It works with any short stories or picture books you can find. There is a great book published by Scholastics called Teaching Literary Elements. It is at school, let me know if you want the ISBN number for it. I would also use picture books to help with the literary elements.

Hope that helps, you can email me privately if you want more help.
