I too,had a few wet eyes on the first few days of school. Luckily, I teach a half day program, so it wasn't so bad! One thing to consider, which I have found to be very successful, is to allow the kids to have a small item that can be placed in their pocket that will remind them of mom or dad. I had some students last year who had a necklace, or a bracelet, even a ribbon with a "kiss" on it. It sounds really simple, but it has worked wonders for me, and it isn't very distracting.
