There is a cute story about a little boy who thinks he is going to die because the doctor says his temperature is 101 or something. He grew up in England and heard that people die if their temperatures go over 40 (Celsius, of course). His grandfather has to explain things to him. I have seen this story in a 7th-grade textbook, but I remember it being pretty short, and it would probably work with younger students. It's not a picture book, though. Would that still work for you? I can't remember what it is called, but I'll look it up.
